Parent’s Covenant
for St. Anne Catholic School
-
-
As my child’s most important
educator, I understand that I teach best by my own example of reverence,
responsibility, and respect. I ask the Catholic school to assist me in
forming my child as a disciple of Jesus Christ. I understand that my
child’s teacher is a dedicated professional who makes many sacrifices to
teach in a Catholic school. In order to show my cooperation, support,
and thankfulness, I will, to the best of my ability:
-
-
-
U
Ensure that we pray as a family every night and attend
Mass on weekends (as a family when possible). I will set an example for
my child by the reverent way I participate at Mass.
-
U
Tell my child I love him/her and demonstrate that love by
the choices I make for his/her well-being. I will not replace personal
attention with material goods.
-
U
Make sure the health needs of my child (nutrition,
hygiene, adequate sleep, etc.) are met in helping prepare for a day of
school.
-
U
Limit the use of television, telephone, computer, and
other distractions from homework on school nights, setting homework as
the priority. As a supporter of Catholic values and teachings, I will
monitor my child’s use of telephones, computers, computer and television
programs, movies, magazines, etc.
-
U
Know where my child is, whom he/she is with, and what
he/she is doing at all times.
-
U
Have my child in school, on time every day, with the
necessary school supplies. I will schedule all vacations outside school
time.
-
U
Not tolerate vulgar, sarcastic, hateful, foul, off-color
or suggestive language from my child, and I will set a good example in
my own use of language.
-
U
Not tolerate bullying, violent or aggressive speech or
behavior.
-
U
Not serve alcohol to my child or any other minor; I will
refuse permission for my child to attend an event where there will be
underage drinking.
-
U
Show respect for the teacher and any other adult in
authority in front of my child, regardless of what I may think of their
actions or say to them in private. When I do need to speak with the
teacher, I will do so respectfully with a willingness to listen.
-
U
Never lie to the pastor, principal or teachers to protect
my child from the consequences of his/her behavior.
-
U
Attend school orientation and fall conferences.
-
U
Stop rumors. I will go through the proper channels when I
have a problem.
-
U
Speak to the teacher or adult in charge before I accept my
child’s version of an incident. I know that the good of all the children
comes before my child’s needs or wants.
-
U
Respect the rules of visiting school. I will report to the
school office when I need to see my child and wait for the school
personnel to contact the teacher. I will not go to the classroom to
observe or to speak to my child unless arrangements have been made.
-
U
Be respectful at school activities, such as athletic
events (cheering only positively for St. Anne’s – not negatively toward
the opposing team, coaches or game officials), music programs, and other
performances. I will ensure that all other family members in attendance
will be respectful as well.
-
U
Follow the school’s rules, calendars and deadlines and
expect my child to do the same, even when I might disagree.
-
U
Be a true steward of my time and talents towards my parish
and school by volunteering at two or more activities per school year.
-
U
Be a true steward of my treasure toward my parish and
school, tithing at least eight percent of my gross income to support the
parish and school.
-
-
- With the example of the Holy Family and the
help of God, I will abide by this covenant while my child is enrolled in
St. Anne Catholic School.

SCHOOL PERSONNEL AND
ORGANIZATIONS
-
- PASTOR
- The
pastor is the exofficio chief administrative officer in the parish
school. Among other duties, he shall make certain that all rules,
regulations and policies of the Diocesan Board of Education, the
Diocesan School Office, and the Parish Board of Education are observed.
-
-
PRINCIPAL
- The
Principal is the functional leader of the Catholic School, responsible
to the Pastor, Diocesan Superintendent, State Department of Education
and the Religious Community staffing the school. Her primary duties
include administration and supervision of the instructional program.
-
- TEACHERS
- All
teachers are responsible for the academic instruction of the students.
They constantly evaluate their growth and achievement. They maintain
and promote discipline and other important social functions. They have
valid certificates of the State of Kansas, and are employed under the
form of contracts. They are expected to assume their share of
extra-curricular activities and supervision.
-
ST. ANNE SCHOOL COUNCIL MISSION STATEMENT
- To provide
input and feedback to the pastor and administration while being
representative of those who wish to share in the development,
implementation, and protection of the vision of Catholic Education.
-
-
- The
school council serves in an advisory capacity to the pastor and the
principal. It assists the pastor and the principal, in conformity with
Church law and policies of the Wichita Diocesan Board of Education. It
helps in setting goals and objectives for the school. It provides for
responsible administration and supervision of the school and carries out
diocesan directives regarding curriculum. It also studies and judges the
problems referred to the board, while supporting the pastor and principal
in all matters pertaining to education.
-
- The
school council is a policy making board, which is a guide to the
administrator. It tells the administrator in general how it would like to
have the school function. Implementing the policy is the role of the
principal.
-
- The
School Council, the pastor, and the principal, work together each giving
and receiving from each other such things as vision, direction,
information, and trust.
-
- The
School Council is comprised of nine elected members plus the pastor and
principal, who are non-voting members. Three new members are elected each
year to serve a three year term.
-
HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
-
- We wish to
welcome all families of St. Anne's to the 2007/2008 school year. We pray
that you will be an active parent with our teachers and show support in
our mission to further your children's Catholic education, for that is the
reason for Home and School. All parents are automatically members of this
organization.
-
- Our first
and major fund-raiser of the year will be the candy sale. The money that
is raised each year helps us to purchase many school items that we so
desperately need. We raise approximately $13,000, so as you can see, this
fundraiser is very profitable.
-
- The Home
& School Association sponsors skating parties at Roller City the 3rd
Friday of the month and other family events throughout the year.
-
- We hope
that you will join us at our first Home & School meeting on September 25th
, at 7:00 p.m. It's a great way to meet your children's teachers and new
people from school. It also gives you an opportunity to present ideas and
to be a part of the decision making process.
-
- We
welcome students to grow spiritually and academically; we welcome parents
to join in partnership with our school to a community of people willing to
reflect Jesus Christ and fulfill his command, "Go forth and teach".

love,

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
Classes are in
session from
8:00-3:15
unless otherwise noted. Doors are unlocked at
7:40 a.m.
Prior to 7:40 a.m. and after 3:25 p.m., students on St. Anne's property
will be sent to our Before/After School Program. Please be prompt in
picking them up after school.
The school should be notified in advance if you plan for your child/ren
to walk or ride a bus home after school.
In the case of
severe weather at the close of school, students may be sent to the
Before/After School Program a little earlier.
Teachers will
remain in the school until at least 3:30 so you may have the opportunity to
confer with them should you wish to do so.
RELEASING
STUDENTS DURING SCHOOL HOURS
- For all foreseen absences as well
as for early dismissal, a written excuse must be presented to the teacher
after being signed by the parent and the principal before permission is
granted. In requesting early dismissal, please give directions as to who
will be coming for your child. We will not release a child to someone we
do not know without the parent(s) having directed us to do so.
When a student arrives late
to school or is returning from an appointment the person bringing
him/her and the student must come to the office to check in and get an
“Admit to Class” form. When a student is being dismissed early or leaving
during the day, the person picking them up must come to the office and
sign them out. If this is a Middle School Student, the person picking up
will receive a “Release from Class” form to give to the teacher before the
child will be released. K-5 elementary students will be picked up in the
office and do not need a release form.
-
RETAINING AFTER SCHOOL
No child will be retained after school more
than 5 minutes without the parent's permission.
FACULTY INSERVICE
- In
conjunction with the Diocesan Office and with State regulations, we will
have full day Inservice for the Teachers as indicated on the School
Calendar. We will have Faculty Meetings on the third Friday of every
month at 12:00 noon, at which time the students will be dismissed.
-
-
ATTENDANCE AT MASS
-
-
The school Mass is scheduled so that all students will have the
opportunity to participate twice a week. The Liturgy will be planned
so that the students will have the opportunity to actively participate in
it - thus hoping that the students will grow to love the Mass more and
have a deeper understanding of its meaning.
-
- The Liturgy
Schedule for this term will be the following:
-
Tuesday - Grades 5, 6, 7, 8
- Wednesday - Grades 1, 2, 3,
4
-
Friday - All students Grades 1 - 8
-
- (Kindergarten students attend special liturgies and during the 2nd
semester, all Friday Masses.)
-
EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM
There
will be an Extended Day Program at St. Anne's School beginning with the
first full day of school. The hours of operation are 7:00 - 7:40 a.m.
and 3:15 - 5:30 p.m. We will provide a snack, as well as a combination
of free play and structured study. We will charge a non-refundable $10
registration fee per family.
School
personnel will provide supervision. On
Noon Dismissal and Faculty Meeting days
there will NOT be any care provided.
Parents who register
their children for Extended Day Program are required to sign a form
indicating their support for the program.
FOR THE
SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS, all
students who are still on St. Anne's property after 3:25 p.m. will be
sent to the Extended Day Program, and you will receive a bill
accordingly.
-
ADMISSION TO ST. ANNE'S SCHOOL
In
accordance with Kansas State Law, children entering Kindergarten must be
5 years of age on or before August 31st of the school year.
Children entering St. Anne for the first time shall present their report
card from the preceding school term or the former school.
A
Baptismal Certificate and a Certificate of First Communion received are
required, if these students have not received these Sacraments at
St. Anne. Since school records cannot be completed until such are
presented, report cards will not be issued until these have been
received.
-
NEWSLETTER
-
- A
newsletter will be sent home the first part of the month. The YOUNGEST
child in your family will receive this letter. Be sure to read this as
it will keep you informed of what is occurring at school. Also, please
refer to your school calendar for the monthly schedule.
-
EMERGENCY CARDS
- We
IMPLORE you to keep us updated on any changes on telephone numbers or
the "Emergency" person that you listed on these cards.
-
-
Please keep the teachers alerted to any special needs that your child
may have, such as impaired eyesight, poor hearing, etc.

PHONE
-
-
Students will be permitted to use the phone only in EMERGENCIES.
Their after school plans should be taken care of before leaving home in
the morning. Students MAY NOT call home to ask parents to bring
homework, lunch money, library books, P.E. clothes and so on. No cell
phones, pagers, CD players, head phones, etc are allowed at school.
-
- If
something arises during the day which could not be solved ahead of time,
please call the School Office at 522-6131 and we will see that the
message is delivered. Please do not phone the Middle School Building
unless it is an EMERGENCY. This takes the teachers or a student out of
class to answer the phone.
-
-
-
REPORT CARDS
-
-
Report cards are issued at the end of each quarter as is listed on the
calendar. Parents are asked to study these carefully with the student.
Please call for an appointment to discuss any concerns that you might

MID-TERM REPORTS
-
-
-
Mid-Term reports will be sent home with all students midway through each
nine week period. The specific time will be listed on the calendar.
Mid-terms are designed to alert you of progress/lack of progress in
academics/behavior so that those areas can be addressed before quarter
grades come out. Mid-terms are not final grades.
-
-
-
CONFERENCES
-
-
-
Conferences will be held at the end of the first quarter. Forms will be
sent home prior to that time giving you the opportunity to suggest to us
your preference of time. The fall conferences are mandatory for each
family. In situations where parents share custody, we will require that
they schedule a conference together.
-
- Time
will also be set aside for conferences during the 3rd quarter.
-
-
Please do not come to the classroom unannounced, or during school
times. It places the teacher in the awkward position of having
responsibility for the students, while trying to converse outside the
room.
-
- If
there is a problem to be discussed at any time, the procedure should
be: First, the parents meet with the individual teacher to discuss it.
If the problem persists after a couple of discussions, then the
principal is to be notified and a conference will be set up. No
parent is to by-pass a teacher and go directly to the principal
under normal circumstances. If all of this fails, then recourse to the
pastor may be desired.
-
-
-
ABSENCES
-
-
Illness will be the main reason for a
student not to attend classes. That is understood. That is excused.
Funerals and medical appointments (doctor; dentist) will be counted
approved absences. We know that it is difficult at times to get
dental/doctor appointments outside of school time, but we really do
appreciate your efforts in trying to accomplish this. All written work
is expected to be made up for excused and unexcused absences. No amount
of make-up work can completely satisfy for a day missed; the oral work
and the board work are not thus recoverable.
-
-
PRIMARY
- You
may ask the teachers for work missed after your child returns,
but the responsibility of helping the child with this work is yours as
the parent.. The teacher will check this when she has time. The student
has one day for every day he/she was absent to get the make-up work
turned in with a limit of one week
-
-
GRADES 6, 7, & 8
-
Homework will be given when the child returns or the homework can be
picked up at the end of the day by an adult or responsible student if
the teachers have been notified by
8:30 a.m.
Upon
returning, each student should check with each classroom teacher
to be sure that all the assignments due or work covered has been noted.
It is the student's responsibility to turn in absent work.
The student has one day for every day he/she was absent to get the
make-up work turned in with a limit of one week. Even if the student is
absent, the assignment should be sent to the school that day. Long term
assignments are due on the designated day or no
credit is given. In case of an extended illness, special arrangements
should be made with the classroom teacher. Sick children who are absent
should NOT come after school to pick up their homework.
-
-
Any student who is suspended, expelled, or for any other reason out of
school for disciplinary problems, will be required to complete all
assignments missed; however, NO CREDIT will be given for this particular
work if it is an Out-of-School suspension. CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN if it is
an In-School suspension.
-
- It IS
necessary to phone the school, as early as possible, regarding the
absence of your child. If the school office has not been contacted by
9:30 a.m., we will try to reach the parent to verify the
student's absence.
-
-
Before the child returns to school after an illness, diocesan policy
requires us to have a dated, written excuse, signed by the
parents, even though you have reported the student’s illness in
advance. For our records we will keep names of those who do not return
excuses. If the child has had some communicable disease, it must be
reported to the school office and a written statement from the doctor is
necessary before he/she can return to school.
-
- If a
child becomes ill at school, or is injured on the playground, parents
will be notified promptly. If the parents, or their designates, cannot
be reached, we will call 911 if the situation is critical

DIOCESAN SCHOOL POLICY ON ATTENDANCE
-
-
To obtain the maximum benefit from a Catholic school education,
students need to be in school everyday. Parents are to be reminded that
the compulsory education law of Kansas requires students to be in school
every day unless excused by the principal. Being absent for such
reasons as vacations, sporting events, school activities where the
student is not a participant, shopping, babysitting, or travel is not
acceptable, and parents should not ask for their children to be excused
for such reasons.
-
-
The school
shall take attendance daily and maintain a record of all absences and
tardiness. Parents should contact the school prior to an absence or
tardy and request that their child be excused that day. The school,
however, retains the right to determine which absences and tardiness
will be excused, which will not, and appropriate consequences for
unexcused absences. The school should try to determine the reason for
any absence on the day of the absence, and keep a record of attendance
until the close of the school year.
-
- When
a tardy or absence is determined to be inexcusable, less than full
credit shall be awarded for make-up work. When a student has
missed more than five sessions of any class in a semester, the student
may be required to make-up work after school, on Saturdays, or in an
approved summer school program before credit is awarded. When a
student has missed more than ten sessions of any class in a semester or
twenty in a year, the school may withhold credit or retain the student
in the same grade unless the school, upon review, determines that
another consequence is more appropriate.
-
-
-
TARDY
-
- If a
student is tardy, (arriving after 8:00), a written explanation of
the reason from the parent must be presented to the teacher upon
entering the building. (Please do not just write "Mary is
tardy"). Written excuses should be presented a day in advance for
absences due to dental appointments and the like. Please ask the doctor
to complete an Examination Card for the school. This will enable us to
keep up-to-date health records. Students being tardy should be the
exception! Any student who has an unexcused tardy will eat lunch
alone on the 3rd offense thereafter. Three unexcused tardies
will result in a demerit in the Middle School.
-
- Students who are
excused for "necessary appointments" and are absent less than two hours
are counted "tardy appointment". Students who are absent longer than
two hours constitute an absence of at least a half day.
-
-
TRUANCY
-
- In
accordance with state law 72-1113, a student shall be considered truant
if the child is inexcusably absent on either three consecutive days or
five or more days in any semester. If truancy occurs, parents are
contacted. If the situation is not resolved, the State Department of
Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) is notified.

HOMEWORK
-
-
Education is a continuous process. Some class projects may extend to
after school hours and require some homework. Homework will be given,
especially in the Middle School. Homework encourages responsible
growth. However, if you feel that your child is spending an unusual
amount of time on homework, please contact the individual teacher.
-

RESPONSIBILITY
-
Responsibility is an important character trait of the truly Christ-Like
person. To develop this characteristic in our students, we expect each
one to be accountable for his/her own actions, and also accountable for
the group action of a class in so far as he/she is a member. It is
his/her responsibility to care for his/her books, desk, etc. Students
should have names on their book bags, coats, hats, lunch pails, uniforms,
sweatshirts, school sweaters, etc.
- We ask
that parents help reinforce this same philosophy at home.
COURTESY AND GENERAL DISCIPLINE
-
-
Because we are all made in the image and likeness of God, we reverence
ourselves and each other as temples of the Holy Spirit. This reverence
should be shown through considerate and thoughtful behavior by and
towards all. Nothing less than this is expected or tolerated. It is
our hope that home and school will work together in the formation of
such attitudes. The discipline that we hope to foster at St. Anne is
one imposed from within the individual student, rather than that imposed
from without. The student is a St. Anne student at all times. A
student who engages in conduct, whether inside or outside the school,
that is detrimental to the reputation of the school, may be disciplined
by school officials.
-
- When undesirable
conduct such as: Lack of respect of authority, name calling, racial slurs,
“put downs”, and mean spirited teasing occur, consequences decided upon by
the teacher and/or principal will follow. (Every effort is made to train
our students in the exercise of self-control and responsible behavior).
-
-
DISCIPLINE POLICY
-
At St. Anne
we try to maintain a positive atmosphere emphasizing personal
responsibility. However, we do realize that in dealing with children
sometimes the unexpected and undesirable can occur. The following
guidelines have been set down to deal with conduct unbecoming a Catholic
student and other disciplinary matters. These guidelines apply at St.
Anne School, school property, and school sponsored activities
such as field trips, athletic events, etc.
-
-
Consequences:
Elementary and Middle School: One day of in-school suspension
for each offense may be administered. Class work given during an
in-school suspension will be made up and credit will be given for this
work.
-
- Any student who is out of school for
suspension will be required to make up all work but will not
receive any credit for this work. Students who have been
expelled must satisfy all financial obligations, including the return of
textbooks, before records will be released to any other school.
-
-
The principal (and/or) pastor is the final
recourse in all disciplinary situations and may waive any and all
regulations for just cause at his or her discretion. When rules aren’t
followed consequences will be given depending upon the nature of the
offense.
-
- MIDDLE SCHOOL: DEMERIT CARD
-
1.
Students are issued a demerit card. If a student is given a
demerit for any reason, the teacher indicates the reason on the card.
The parent will be notified by e-mail or voice-message, if possible,
each time a demerit is issued.
-
-
2.
Once the five demerits on the first card have been exhausted, the
parents must attend a conference with the Middle School teachers with
the student in attendance.
-
-
3.
A second demerit card is issued. All of the above (Item #1)
still apply to each demerit. After the second demerit card has been
used up, a conference will once again be scheduled with the Middle
School teachers, the principal, the parents, and the student. A
severe warning is given at this point to let the student and parents
know that there has not been a satisfactory modification of the
student’s behavior at school.
-
-
4.
No third demerit card will be issued. Any further infraction of
the school rules or expectations will be dealt with at the discretion of
the teacher and/or principal. Loss of field trips or 8th
grade class trip may be a consequence of poor behavior.
-
-
5.
All incidences of serious bodily harm to another student or adult
(assault), sexual harassment, or bullying will be grounds for immediate
dismissal at the discretion of the principal and pastor.

THREATENED VIOLENCE
-
Threatened violence could be defined as threatening to cause physical harm
to another. While this definition does not deal with emotional or verbal
abuse, or other intangible injuries, it is nonetheless a clear definition
of violence.
-
-
Elementary Students: There will be a zero tolerance policy for
threatened or actual violence. Threats will result in suspension and
required counseling before the student will be allowed to return to
school. Older elementary school students might be suspended and referred
to counseling on the first offense. The principal (and/or pastor) is the
final recourse in all disciplinary situations and may waive any and all
regulations for just cause at his or her discretion. Any such threats
will be reported to the police.
-
POLICY ON BULLYING/HARASSING
BEHAVIOR
- In Catholic schools, the faith community
of students and adults should respect, protect, and share the god-given
life and worth and dignity of every person, regardless of ability,
gender, appearance, cultural background, or interests.
-
- Such behaviors can include, but are not
limited to teasing, poking, biting, and hitting or extorting money,
food, favors, or other possessions from another person, whether it is
